Toronto Blue Jays Return to the World Series for the First Time Since 1993
In honour of this moment, here is our obligatory 1993 throwback post that talks Toronto Blue Jays, Leonardo DiCaprio's Dating History & Threats To Canada Democracy
Tonight, the Blue Jays return to the World Series for the first time since 1993 — so of course we had to do the obligatory look back at 1993 ;).
⏮️ TBT TO 1993
⏮️ Ah, 1993. Back then, the Blue Jays played at the SkyDome, you had to wait up to a week to develop and see the photos you took. Glove compartments in cars held fold-out maps that you actually used to navigate the roads. And everyone had a landline—not just your parents.
The first Wu-Tang Clan album dropped and became one of the most influential hip-hop albums ever1, Jurassic Park dominated box offices with CGI dinosaurs that felt more real than anything we’d seen, and none of the women Leonardo DiCaprio has dated in the last decade had even been born yet.
⏮️ Here in Canada, as mentioned, the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series back-to-back —and the Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup!
We also had a major shake-up in the federal government, as Canadians elected Liberal Leader Jean Chrétien as Prime Minister following the disastrous term and resignation of Conservative PM Brian Mulroney2.
⏭️ FAST FWD BACK TO THE FUTURE
Now, fast-forward ⏭️ to 2025, and the Blue Jays are back in the World Series and former PM Chrétien is back making headlines this month for his blunt warnings about President Donald Trump.
Last week, Chrétien called Trump a “threat to democracy,” criticizing his efforts to pressure Canada and undermine democratic norms.
*️⃣ DIVE DEEPER WITH OCP
Look, we agree with the former PM—but the threats to democracy aren’t just foreign. The part missing from Canada’s discourse since Trump took office again—despite ample evidence and expert consensus—is that the threat is domestic too. AKA the call is coming from inside the house, Canada.
From the “Freedom” Convoy, to the so-called “parental rights“ (read: anti-trans) marches, hijab bans in Quebec, Danielle Smith pushing book bans in Alberta, Doug Ford’s casual and consistent use of the notwithstanding clause, and Pierre Poilievre regularly pulling straight from the Republican playbook with things like his anti-DEI petition (aka he is anti-Diversity Equity Inclusion) —Canada’s #MadeInCanada hard-far-right wave is loud and visible – if you know what to look for.
So yes, Donald Trump is the f*cking worst, AND he’s also just one (visible) symptom of an infectious disease called authoritarianism that Canada is not immune to.
🆘 SO, WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT
We can start by doing the quiet, brave thing: talking about it. And doing that requires you to reject “Canadian Politeness 🙅🏽♀️” and choose ‘Canadian Kindness 🙋🏽♀️’ instead.
Authoritarianism thrives when people who feel something is wrong but get stuck figuring out how to take action. When we’re unsure, afraid to offend, or convinced that “it couldn’t happen here,” we leave space for harm to keep growing.
So we invite you to disrupt conversations that minimize the threats to Canada—both domestic and foreign— that violate human rights, harm our planet and covertly normalize authoritarianism.
Now, If that feels daunting to do, we totally get it; we’ve been there, too. We’re not suggesting you go off and start having arguments with folks – unless that sparks joy for you – rather, we hope to help folks approach these conversations with kindness, confidence and ease.
If you need help doing that, RSVP to join us on Tuesday, November 11 at 6 p.m. ET for a virtual community call.
Feeling brave during Scorpio season? Then share this link to three people you care about who don’t usually engage in issues like this for a #DemocracySneakAttack 💞, inviting them to read our take on the Toronto Blue Jays ⚾️ 😉

On the November 13, 1993, episode of Saturday Night Live, Mike Myers played newly elected Prime Minister Jean Chrétien during the “Weekend Update” segment that, tbh, is still really funny and relevant.
Footnotes, Musings & ADHD Parkours
So influential that Rihanna and ASAP Rocky named their kid after Wu-Tang Clan founder RZA | Also, I watched Wu-Tang: An American Saga this summer and 15/10 recommend it.
So as a 90s millennial I don’t really have much context or memory around the Chretien and Mulroney years — so I did some digging—
Mulroney Mayhem
Jean Chrétien got elected after Conservative Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was forced out in ’93—a spectacular flameout after nearly a decade of ruthless cuts.
Mulroney’s Conservative government ripped the guts out of Canada’s social safety net — reading about it made us want to throw up.
Here are some of the things he did:
Privatized 23 Crown corporations worth billions, including Air Canada ($473M in assets sold), Petro-Canada ($10B+ in assets), CN Rail, Connaught Laboratories, De Havilland Aircraft
Slashed social housing by $1 billion over five years in 1992-93 budgets (Spring Magazine)
Ended federal funding to Unemployment Insurance in 1990; coverage dropped from 70%+ to under 60% and kept falling (Statistics Canada)
Used back-to-work legislation 9 times between 1985-1992 against dockworkers, rail workers, postal workers, hospital workers, and public service workers
Deployed 4,000 troops against Mohawk land defenders at Kanehsatà:ke in 1990 after police raid killed one officer; military surrounded communities for months
Took almost no action on HIV/AIDS until 1990 despite years of activist pressure and a growing crisis
Tried to re-criminalize abortion in 1989 with legislation banning abortions unless mother’s health was at risk (failed in Senate — thank god)
Allowed free vote on capital punishment that almost brought back the death penalty in Canada
Attempted to keep marijuana in same legal category as heroin
Approval rating hovered around 12% between 1990-1993—lowest in Canadian history
1993 election reduced Progressive Conservatives from 156 seats to 2—most humiliating defeat of a governing party in Canadian history —Party never recovered; had to merge with Canadian Alliance (formerly Reform Party) in 2003 to survive which is why the vote isn’t split on the right
Raised $60M for Mulroney Institute at StFX from scandal-ridden billionaires, including anti-climate change billionaire David Koch, people named in Paradise Papers for tax avoidance, individuals in Panama Papers bribery schemes, and arms dealers
Sat on the boards of Blackstone Group, Barrick Gold, Quebecor, and multiple other corporations after leaving office
75th birthday party in Palm Beach attended by billionaires, including David Koch, Charles Bronfman, Wilbur Ross, Galen Weston, Stephen Schwarzman (Blackstone Group founder), and Rush Limbaugh
His last public speech was an ardent defence of Israel’s genocide in Gaza at World Jewish Congress
One legacy of PM Mulroney’s that I was aware of before I started ADHD Parkouring is that PM Mulroney is the father of my least favourite Canadian nepo-baby, Ben Mulroney
On Ben’s radio show and social platforms, he consistently uses dog-whistle anti-immigrant tropes get spun as policy talk and “national interest,” positioning migrants as burdens or threats, but never saying it outright. Classic conservative tactic: coded language covers for exclusion while giving defenders plausible deniability
As a B’nai Brith ambassador, Mulroney openly fronts for the pro-Israel lobby, blasting Palestinian statehood. He uses “balanced” journalism as cover while pushing narratives that minimize or erase Palestinian human rights, doubling down on anti-Palestinian and Islamophobic commentary.
Guess the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree, eh?💆🏾♀️

Understanding the Modern Right
In school, we were taught that “the right” meant fiscal discipline, small government, and respect for tradition. That was the sanitized story—one that erased how those “traditions” were built on stol…
